Here's my first video on the blog!!! It's very exciting for me!
My friend Nita is an expert at decorating, even if she won't admit it :) I've got a living room that desperately needs her touch! Kenny took this video of the living room -- I just don't know what exactly to do with the furniture -- the tv is probably going to have to go against the wall on the right. We thought about mounting it over the fireplace, but that's just too much of a hassle. So, all of you are invited to take a look -- if you have any ideas, they would be welcome :) Do the couch and love seat have to be "squared off" like that????

I know it's a hassle but I like the idea of the flat screen over the fireplace. That's what we plan on having a friend do for us.
Sheri - I know my decorator friend, Janet, would say put it over the fireplace! She might say to get rid of the love seat and get a couple chairs too. If she's available, I'll ask her to take a look at your video. Looks like a lot of fun you guys are having!
Sheri - My friend, Janet, has the following comments....."Currently the couch is in front of the fire place, it needs to go on the longer wall opposite the kitchen.....The love seat needs to go where the couch is now, in front of the fireplace. Behind the couch needs to be a sofa table with a tall lamp, greenery, family pictures etc. because the back of the couch is all you can see from the front door, so to soften the look the sofa table would add warmth and be more inviting than the back of the couch.......Once the couch and love seat are moved that leaves an open space to the kitchen which should be open for better access with the kids, etc. It would be nice to have a couple of bar stools for more seating......Additionally your friend could add a nice large ottoman, brown leather, as a coffee table or extra seating; or she could get 4 smaller ottomans, brown leather, and put 2 under each window to serve as seating, etc. the brown leather will transition for later years and it is kid friendly. The Room Store, Garden Ridge & Target have ottomans.
I agree with; you, the television needs to be above the fireplace. Also a 6-7” plant would be nice in the corner between the entry from the stairs to the kitchen.....Have fun.....Janet
You guys are great! Nita e-mailed me her thoughts too, which, funny enough, are strikingly similar to these here! Especially the idea of a sofa table with greenery, etc on it behing the love seat to "warm" the room up! Trish, can you send the friend down to hook it up for us over the fireplace? My first question to ALL of you is this: won't there be wires hanging out below the tv???
Next question: If the couch is against the long wall, should it be AGAINST the wall, or pulled out from the wall? The love seat has to be pushed up to allow for a walking space behind it and into the kitchen. So, if the couch was pushed against the long wall, it would look "pushed back" compared to the love seat. Does that make sense? And if the couch is pushed forward, not against the wall, then do you put something behind it?
We promise dinner to all of you who come out to visit us in Atlanta for all of this expert advice! :) I mean it -- Angela, can you get your friend Janet out here????

Our wires ARE hanging out all over our fireplace--it's driving me crazy--that's why we're getting a friend to mount it properly--what we're going to do is: mount the t.v. and put an outlet behind the t.v.(I think) and also run our cable wire through the wall (from behind the t.v.)to the outside. I don't know if this makes any sense but I can call you to explain. Also, there is a plastic wire cover thingy you can buy to hide wires.
So, a "professional" can make it so it all goes behind the tv? What about your dvd player, where is that? I need you to take a video of how you have it and post if on your blog!!! :) I am very demanding aren't I? THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!
Can someone comment on my question about what to do about the couch against the long wall? I know it can't be against the wall -- that looked bad when we tried it tonight. BUT...should we put tall plants or something between it and the wall to bring it all together? Then, should we be hanging a picture or something on that long wall?
The couches should be squared as they are now, just on a different wall and reversed. If the long couch seems too far back, place another sofa table behind it and put reading lamps etc on top. Another item that will warm the room would be to put a rug in front of the long couch w/ the coffee table (ottoman).
The “cable guy” can normally handle the wire situation w/ the television; if not, disguise them along the mantle and the side of the fireplace (greenery & trailing ivy are a great source).

Behind the couch, place a large mirror with sconces on either side.
If there is room at the end of the couch (near the window), a plant would add that warmth you are looking for.

About the rug: Should it be big enough that the coffee table sits on it, or does not sit on it?

PS: Who knew ottomans were such a big item? I went on Target.com and they had 8 pages of them!!! Also, I have never heard of 'The Room Store' but I found it on line and it looks very interesting -- I bookmarked it!

The rug is to anchor the room; just from looking at the video blog probably a minimum of a 5' X 7' rug would work w/ the coffee table on the rug. Lowe's and Home Depot have great rugs that are reasonably priced.
It may seem like the love seat is all alone, so place 2 of the ottomans in front of it for the boy's feet, games, etc.

Janet -- thank you so much! I want to make sure i am understanding you right about the sofa -- it's actually the sofa that is along the long wall (switched w/the loveseat from this video like you said); should that sofa be against the long wall or pulled away from it about 2 feet so it's "in the grouping"? And then, the way I understood you was that we should pull it away from the wall; put a sofa table behind it (as well as behind the love seat which you see when coming up the stairs) and have tall reading lamps on it as well.

Yes, pull the couch out away from the wall w/ the sofa table behind the sofa on the long wall. The sofa and love seat need to be in the same grouping and look like they are.
Since I am unsure of the spacing; the only other alternative would be to place the couch much closer to the love seat and place a couple of chairs on the long wall, with a table between the chairs. e.g. a reading area. Then you would not need the second sofa table behind the couch.
Hope all this makes sense.
If these ideas still don't look right to you might consult Nita; or you may move the furniture like the first paragraph mentions and e-mail a digital picture to me @ stagethis@tx.rr.com & I'll see what other suggestions I can come up with.

Excellent, thanks again! I love this staging thing!!!! I will post a video as soon as I have it put together and see what you guys think. Now, as far as the TV goes, no promises on how long it's going to take to get it up over the fireplace. The DISH guy said today that it could cost $400 - $500 to mount it -- comments? Right now we are watching it, it's sitting on the floor in front of the fireplace :)
